This week I had an audition for a company that makes family trees and other genetics (you can guess which one), and as we were in the waiting room trying to figure out the story of our family and genetics, I realized that whatever we are a part of genetically shouldn't hold us back.
It shouldn't keep us in the past. It's our history, yes, and we should know it (to the best of our ability), but we shouldn't put all stock into it. It's different if you've been adopted and your history is actually all you want to know, but just like finding out you're adopted, finding out new information about where you're from, when you thought you were from somewhere else, could feel paralyzing. It doesn't mean your adopted parents are not your real parents or your present isn't your reality. Just because you grew up thinking you're French and you find out you're Brazilian, you shouldn't feel cheated. You're still very much your unique you. No one can take that from you.
But since we're talking about you, I want you to know that you don't need to use your story as a crutch for your present. Never use your story to explain or excuse how you are now. No. Cut it out. Begin again. Make up a new story if you have to. Only you create your narrative. And when you become famous, then you can say that you were going to quit acting after that audition but you ended up booking that job! You can share your perseverance when you've made it, but right now, turn the story around on yourself.
What do you want to happen to you instead of clinging on to what's holding you where you are? Release the story you've been telling yourself. That story that you're a child of divorce, that society didn't do enough for you, that nobody cares, people owe you somehow, everyone is against you, something always happens, that this and that... What haven't I heard.
Whatever story you're telling yourself that's not serving you and keeping you where you are, I want you to start releasing it. If it doesn't serve you, stop rehashing it. You know where you come from but it's not where you're going. Start rewiring your brain toward the future. Be open to brainstorming some easy solutions to things you've been saying you want. Open your mind and your heart to possibilities.
Know where you come from in terms of what you’ve done, what you've lived through, what you've been through. Know your foundation, but don’t let it define you. They call me citizen of the world not because I've lived and traveled places, but also because of how I position myself, who I care about, and where I want to go.
Your story is something that no one can take from you. The way you tell your story will let people know what you focus on and how far you're willing to jump.
Make it a good story. Live a great life!
