One of the most interesting concepts is that everything is connected, and not just connected on the surface, but interconnected as well.
Every event in your life has a backstory. Think of an important event in your life and then connect the dots to how that came about. Who lead you there, what connected you, what coincidences happened, did you intuitively know what to do? You can go years and years back pinpointing which event started a chain reaction.
For instance, the events and people that lead me to acting had nothing to do with it, yet, this is how I got my first important lead role before I was even considering acting:
One of my best friends happened to be in a band with a guy that years down the road sold all of his music equipment to buy photography equipment. He joined a production photography group, thought of me because I've modeled for him on a couple of other projects, and invited me in. I started shooting with a lot of prominent photographers in the area, and became one of the more known models in my city. Then, I was asked to be in a few video projects at school, and THEN I got contacted by a band I didn't know to be their Lead girl in their music video. Being in that video made me want to explore acting as never before!
Then, this week I was collecting some feedback on what my friends thought my strongest characteristics were and my friend surprised me with the following:
"You know how to bring out someone's good characteristics. The first year of college you contributed to the fact that I began to open up and became more sociable."
I was floored because it's not something I have heard her say. So I was a chain reaction person for her too...
Now I want you to watch a 6 minute TED talk with Drew Dudley called Everyday Leadership (If not showing up, refresh the page or click here.) Drew talks about how we have those chain reactions all the time, but also so do people affected by us. We may have indirectly affected someone's life to an amazing degree and don't even know or have a recollection of that moment. He calls this moment a "lollipop moment". The video will explain.
He takes the video further, explaining that we are all leaders, we just shy away from it because we think it's bigger than us. But really, we are all leaders. We all have impacted others or have an opportunity to do so. Drew also encourages us to reach out to that "lollipop moment", you first chain reaction person, to thank them for that influence they had on you. Have you done it before? I've done it with other life stories but not with the one I told you earlier. So today I will reach out to the person crucial in getting me on the path of acting all those years ago. Your homework is to think of your "lollipop moment" or chain reaction and let your person know what it's meant to you.
EDIT: I have talked to my first chain reaction friend and a wonderful coincidence had happened! He said he meant to message me the other day because he wants me to be in his music video! Now if that's not funny, I don't know what is :) Life really is one big chain reaction. Yes, everything comes full circle.
Some wonderful words from Drew:
We need to redefine leadership as being about lollipop moments -- how many of them we create, how many we acknowledge, how many of them we pay forward and how many we say thank you for. Because we've made leadership about changing the world, and there is no world. There's only six billion understandings of it. And if you change one person's understanding of it, understanding of what they're capable of, understanding of how much people care about them, understanding of how powerful an agent for change they can be in this world, you've changed the whole thing.
